We often get asked at Formaz what training is available for forklift drivers, and what is the certificate or attestation one receives. We list it here!

To be in line with the law, employers are required to provide appropriate training to employees who are required to work with a forklift.

Furthermore, the minimum age to drive a motorized machine such as a forklift is set at 18. Finally, you must have a certificate of medical fitness to work with a forklift.

Forklift training for those without experience

Don’t have experience driving a forklift yet? Then the three-day vocational training at Formaz is the best option. This basic training consists partly of theory and partly of practice. On the last day of training falls the exam. This consists of a theoretical (max 30 min) and a practical part (max 30 min).

Upon completion, you will receive a certificate of competence OR a certificate of participation valid for 5 years.

When a certificate, when a certificate of participation?

What does one receive when? There are several scenarios:

  1. The participant fails both parts (theory and practice)
  2. The participant has passed practical but not the theory part: he/she can retake the theory exam, possibly after additional training.
  3. The participant has passed theory but not practice: he/she can retake the practical exam. Getting extra practice before the retake is important then. This allows the participant to join days 2 and 3 of the 3-day course, and the trainer ensures that they get maximum practice on the forklift.

For points 1, 2 and 3, the participant will receive a certificate of participation only. The certificate of participation allows him to work legally, although it does not demonstrate professional competence.

4. The participant passes on theory and practice and receives a forklift operator certificate of competence.

Renewing your forklift operator’s certificate?

After five years after obtaining your forklift operator’s certificate, it must be renewed. You have the following options:

  • or a one-day safety training course. This is a course for advanced drivers. The participant will receive a refresher of both theory and practice on this day. This course also takes an exam for both theory and practice. If one passes, one receives a safety certificate that is also valid for another 5 years.
  • either back a vocational training: The participant may need a comprehensive refresher. In that case, it is best to return to the three-day basic training. Upon positive completion, the participant will receive back a certificate of competence.
